A clever debut film from writer-director Fred Dekker that combines science fiction, horror, and comedy into a fairly entertaining package. Sorority Row, 1959--A young college couple parked on lovers' lane see an object plummet to Earth like a meteor. The boy goes to investigate and finds a canister with large slimy slugs inside. One of the slugs suddenly zooms out of the canister and into his mouth. Sorority Row, 1986--Two nerdy freshmen, Chris (Jason Lively) and J.C. (Steve Marshall), roam the campus during pledge week. Chris falls for a beautiful young coed, Cynthia (Jill Whitlow). To impress her, the nerds decide to pledge a fraternity, but are told they must steal a cadaver from the medical building and leave it on the steps of a rival fraternity. The boys sneak into the medical building and stumble across the corpse of the boy who swallowed the space-slug in 1959, encased in a cryogenic chamber as part of an experiment. They break the corpse free of the chamber, but then flee. Once thawed out, the corpse comes to life. A pretty goofy combination of chills and laughs, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS is one of those hit-or-miss propositions that throws so many scares and jokes into the mix that there isn't time to ponder those that fall flat. The movie is filled with a variety of special effects, most of them done quite well, with the "creeps" themselves taking top honors. leave a comment
