1971, Movie, NR, 88 mins

starstarstarstar
After an absence of almost 20 years, Withers, a British movie star of the 1940s and 1950s, proved herself to still be a competent actress, adding charm to her role as the owner of a pub in the Australian hinterlands. Things change for her with the discovery of nickel in the area. She stakes a claim, but is bought out by an American company headed by Sandor on the condition that Withers does not sell her shares in the company for a year. This gives Sandor a chance to make some phony reports, enabling him to overvalue his corporate shares. Withers lives it up with her new-found wealth, assisted by gigolo Laws, an ex-hippie. In the end Withers settles down with her long-time admirer Devereaux. Except for Withers, the performances are all pretty routine, as is the script and direction. The excellent photography adds some life. McCallum, Withers' real-life daughter, makes her film debut here as. . .Withers' daughter. leave a comment
