Nicholas Nickleby: Review

If Charles Dickens' 800-page novel must be shoehorned into a two-hour feature film, this 2002 adaptation is the way to go: Strip the story down to the bare essentials and fill the gaps with colorful cameos. Charlie Hunnam stars as the titular son of the ruined Nickleby family who finds himself at the mercy of his villainous Uncle Ralph (Christopher Plummer, at his slithery best). There's a lot of impassioned speechifying, but it all goes down rather smoothly, thanks to comic bits by likes of Nathan Lane, Alan Cumming and Barry Humphries aka Dame Edna Everage.
