Kanin was still learning the ropes as a director (this was his second film) and it showed in this implausible yarn. Ball stars as a woman who stands to inherit $20 million if she'll marry a "real American." Her heart belongs to foreigner Bowman, but she picks Ellison as her husband to
qualify for the fortune. Ellison is a ditch-digger and Ball's plan is to head for Reno and a divorce as soon as she gets the money. On the trip to Nevada, Ball and Ellison bicker and battle, all the while becoming closer to one another and finally realizing they are in love. Ball is in good
