MacMurray plays a young man trying to make a go of it in New York who meets the down-and-out Martin. He takes her back to the slum apartment he shares with unemployed art professor Tamiroff. The three live amicably until MacMurray persuades Martin to find a rich man to marry. She does, in Preston, all the while being in love with MacMurray, and he with her. The film ends with MacMurray announcing his love for Martin and winning her back from Preston. Story is too hackneyed to offer anything new, but Vidor manages to add a few dramatic touches (e.g., a shot of a dead canary to indicate a suicide). MacMurray is given little to work with, but Martin overcomes the script to give a strong performance. She sings one song, "Yip I Adee I Ay." leave a comment
