Norma Talmadge, who had begun a very successful silent film career at the age of 14 in A TALE OF TWO CITIES (1911), here attempted to make the transition to talkies. She plays an actress who is married to Roland, an aspiring composer. Roland's excessive drinking puts a strain on the relationship and eventually leads Talmadge to take up with gangster Wray. Wray tries to get Roland completely out of the picture by pinning a murder charge on him, but the plot fails and Wray is revealed as the real killer. Roland gives up the bottle and is reunited with Talmadge. Though Talmadge is reasonably effective in NEW YORK NIGHTS, her career in talking pictures was short-lived. She would make only one more picture, DU BARRY--WOMAN OF PASSION (1930), before retiring to live off the fortune she had accrued from her silent film career. Jean Harlow appears as an extra in NEW YORK NIGHTS. leave a comment
