New York Nights

Working from the same play (Arthur Schnitzler's "Reigen") as Max Ophul's cunningly witty and gracefully charming LA RONDE (1950), Vanderbes and Nuchtern threw away all the substance to create this wretched, boring depiction of the seedy side of Manhattan night life. The film has a similar episodic structure as LA RONDE: a chain of sexual liaisons is created with one character from each episode moving onto a new affair that eventually evolves into an overlapping chain. There are nine such episodes, each as trite and uninteresting as its predecessor. The one bright spot in this picture is McBroom as a sympathetic prostitute.
