NEW YEAR'S DAY is part of the continuing story that director Henry Jaglom began with 1985's ALWAYS, in which he fictionalized his breakup with his wife. In 1988's SOMEONE TO LOVE, Jaglom went looking for a date, and in NEW YEAR'S DAY he comes, alone, to New York looking for a fresh start. The dreary festivities of Jaglom's most recent installment begin as Drew (Jaglom), an unmarried middle-aged writer newly arrived from the West Coast on New Year's Day, tries to reclaim his sublet apartment, only to find the sublessees still in residence. Failing to find a hotel room for the night, Jaglom decides to stay with the three offbeat women. Just when it looks as though a plot is about to rear its head, the party guests start to arrive. Jaglom rarely knows where the laughs are in his films; as soon as something interesting starts to happen, he cuts away to yet another boring conversation. Jaglom's fans will be delighted to know that NEW YEAR'S DAY is more of the same. leave a comment
