A brief segment from the life of the famed composer Franz Schubert is the basis for this film. Curtis, as the composer, flees Vienna to avoid induction into the military. He takes refuge at the estate of Barnes, where he meets and falls in love with Massey, the manager of the estate. They
return to Vienna, and Massey concentrates on making sure Curtis receives the recognition he is due, going so far as a meeting with Beethoven (Basserman). Curtis takes a job as a schoolteacher in order to support his future wife, but Massey returns to Hungary to allow the composer to devote himself
