New Moon: Review
Screen adaptation of this Romberg-Hammerstein operetta was a costly and lavish production that featured the singing of Moore and Tibbett. Story takes place in Russia where Moore, a princess, and Tibbett, a lieutenant in the army, meet on a boat and fall in love. Problems arise because Moore is to marry the governor Tibbett has been sent to serve under. Menjou, as the governor, solves the conflict between himself and Tibbett by sending the soldier to an outpost known for its rugged treatment of commanding officers. Tibbett proves a worthy soldier though, and despite being wounded and presumed dead, he manages to come back to romance Moore. The leads, Tibbett and Moore, have wonderful singing voices, but little acting ability. Songs include: "Lover Come Back to Me," "One Kiss," "Stout-Hearted Men," "Wanting You," "Marianne," and "Funny Little Sailor Men" (Oscar Hammerstein II, Sigmund Romberg). Following the release of NEW MOON, MGM's Irving Thalberg felt Moore was gaining too much weight to be an effective movie love interest, and her contract was allowed to lapse. She went on to Columbia where she enjoyed her greatest successes.
