This touching sequel to THE EMIGRANTS follows the struggle of von Sydow and Ullmann during their first decade in America. The story includes a futile trek to the Southwest to search for gold. The film is a subtle depiction of the hardships people face as they try to find a niche for themselves. The story moves slowly at times, but this helps to focus on the changes that the characters undergo. Nominated for Best Foreign Film in 1972.
