New Blood: Review

This caper-tragedy uses a complicated structure of RASHOMON-like flashbacks to relate the saga of a bungled kidnapping. In league with the vicious Hellman (Joe Pantoliano), henchman Danny White (Nick Moran) was supposed to snatch wealthy Mr. Williams (Rob Freeman), force him to videotape a warning to other businessmen who double-crossed Danny's boss, collect the ransom, and kill Williams anyway. Due to dishonor among thieves — and Williams's slick machinations — the plan has fallen apart. Wounded henchman Danny winds up on the doorstep of his estranged father Alan (John Hurt). Offering a quid pro quo, Danny agrees to donate his heart to his terminally ill sister after he expires from his wounds. In return, Danny asks Alan to pose as his missing kidnap victim to fool his co-conspirators. Not that Danny's revealed his own integral role in the kidnapping; to protect some accomplices, Danny's willing to put his father at risk of being murdered. Tired blood, is more like it! Someone should've grafted plot points from healthier and more original movies onto this putrid hybrid of medical drama and crime thriller. Writer-director Michael Hurst is too preoccupied with the gimmicky flashback-within-flashback structure to bother illuminating the various versions of the crime. As a result, the truth about Danny gets shot down in a hail of bullets that leaves nearly the entire cast in body bags and the audience in a state of confusion. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
