Popular graphic novelist Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and comedian Lenny Henry take viewers on a fantasy tour of London’s other underground — the one located far below the subway tracks and stations. Good Samaritan Richard Mayhew (Gary Bakewell) takes pity on an injured woman oddly named Door (Laura Fraser), and brings her home to his apartment. Nothing in his life as an accountant in "London Above" prepares him for "London Below" or the cutthroats pursuing Door. Mercenaries Mr. Croup (Hywel Bennet) and Mr. Vandermaar (Clive Russell) murdered Lady Door's aristocratic family to prevent the union of all the underground kingdoms, and their current assignment is to keep an eye on Door's activities. Since Richard unwitting got in their way, they add him to their list of enemies; worse, his brush with London Underground has invalidated Mayhew's real life. Since his his co-workers no longer recognize him, Mayhew has little choice but to joins Door's perilous quest to find an angel who goes by the name of Islington (Peter Capaldi). Door, aware of the extent of the danger that awaits them, hires fellow Undergroundlings Marquis De Carabas (Paterson Joseph) and Hunter (Tanya Moodie) as, respectively, her guide and her bodyguard. When they arrive at Islington's lair, the Angel tells them they must retrieve a key from the Black Friars, whose acquisition requires Mayhew to endure a sensory and psychological ordeal no one has ever survived. By the time Croup and Vandemaar capture De Carabas, Door has learned that one of her companions is a traitor. Just what does the Black Friars' key unlock, and can Door keep it from falling into the wrong hands? This BBC miniseries shares with cult series DR. WHO a predilection for tongue-in-cheek villainy, though it favors fantasy over science fiction. Made without benefit of a pricey American TV budget, this clever foray into the dark corners of the imagination sparkles with ingenious situations and witty details. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
