Filmed in Greece for a pittance (under $200,000), this colorful art-house comedy broke through to the mainstream market and made a ton of money. NEVER ON SUNDAY is the brainchild of Jules Dassin, an American writer-director who ran afoul of Red-baiters in the 1950s and had to go to Europe to earn a living. He helmed RIFIFI, then went to Greece, where he met and married Melina Mercouri, NEVER ON SUNDAY's star. Although the film is a standard "hooker with a heart of gold" story, audiences were very much taken with its unfamiliar locale. Dassin not only wrote, produced, and directed, but also costarred as Homer, a tweedy American Grecophile who comes to Piraeus and encounters the local peasantry, who are slightly taken aback by his open ways. Homer loves Greece and everything about it. He soon meets Ilya (Mercouri), a prostitute who takes pride in her work and sees nothing immoral about the way she earns her living. Ilya takes customers six days a week and reserves Sunday for seeing the great Greek plays, none of which she actually comprehends. Homer intends to reform Ilya, but old habits are hard to break. Most of the dialogue is in English with a few speeches in Greek with titles. leave a comment
