This Zane Grey story originally was made as a silent film in 1927, starring Gary Cooper in the role that Mitchum fills in this remake. Mitchum plays a cowpoke out to try his hand at panning for gold, but on the way he is mistaken for the murderer of a homesteader, narrowly escaping being
hanged. He then uncovers the real killer, while falling in love with the homesteader's daughter, Gates. The film marked Mitchum's first lead role and he shows the persona that would identify him for the next 30 years as the tough but laconic hero.
