This Zane Grey story originally was made as a silent film in 1927, starring Gary Cooper in the role that Mitchum fills in this remake. Mitchum plays a cowpoke out to try his hand at panning for gold, but on the way he is mistaken for the murderer of a homesteader, narrowly escaping being hanged. He then uncovers the real killer, while falling in love with the homesteader's daughter, Gates.
