Hector Alterio (CAMILLA; THE OFFICIAL STORY) and the 12-year-old Ana Torrent (CRIA!; SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE) costar in this touching story of the passionate but chaste love an aging gentleman in the Spanish province of Castille feels for a young schoolgirl who shares his love of nature. Alejandro (Alterio) spends his days horseback riding and pretending to conduct Haydn's "Creation" in the woods. His life of solitude is essentially an empty one until he is befriended by the young Goyita (Torrent) and rediscovers a passion for life, loosening his ties to his past and to his dead wife and devoting himself to his new friend. Underneath the innocence and paternalism of the relationship lies a hint of sexuality, which leads to an eternal romantic vow. Nominated for an Oscar in 1980 as Best Foreign-Language Film, THE NEST has been called one of the best Spanish films to emerge since Franco's death. While the direction and photography are perhaps too glossy and romantic and the characters somewhat unbelievable, the view of father-as-provider versus father-as-oppressor is interesting in the context of Spanish post-Franco cinema. And while THE NEST has its faults, the performances are not among them. The chemistry between the two main characters is remarkable, with Torrent able to express volumes with her face.
