Not much happens in Claude Sautet's latest drama -- a marked departure from his UN COEUR EN HIVER (1992), in which nothing happened at all. Tasteful to a fault, NELLY AND MONSIEUR ARNAUD charts the course of a May-December relationship between an elderly judge
(Michel Serrault) and a married 25-year-old (Emmanuelle Beart) whom he hires to edit his memoirs. Serrault is typically insightful and Beart is an eyeful, but we strongly recommend a double espresso to anyone intending to stay fully conscious through the end titles.
