Worn out your tape of the 1968 movie? Have every single episode of the TV series committed to memory? Desperate for one last fix of formulaic bickering, courtesy of neurotic neatnik Felix Unger and world-class slob
Oscar Madison? Then you're probably the audience for this last-gasp pairing of original mismatched roommates Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, consummate professionals who shamble gamely through this mishmash of laboriously contrived situations and wisecracks about aging bladders, smelly cigars and
loud underwear. The excuse for the reunion is that Felix's daughter Hannah (Lisa Waltz) and Oscar's son Brucey (Jonathan Silverman) are getting married in San Malina, CA. Oscar and Felix, who haven't seen each other for 17 years, are to meet up at the airport in Los Angeles and drive together to
the wedding. Nostalgia notwithstanding, the real impetus behind this rather sad and undignified outing is the success of the GRUMPY OLD MEN, GRUMPIER OLD MEN (directed by Howie Deutsch) and OUT TO SEA, all of which proved that potty-mouthed old people acting like spoiled, randy adolescents are
good box office. But do we really want our last memories of the Odd Couple to be Felix and Oscar lamenting their failing manhood? --Maitland McDonagh
