This taut crime thriller rests on two shrewd, perfectly modulated performances, and is a welcome antidote to brainless action extravaganzas in which the mayhem is the message. Samuel L. Jackson is a Chicago hostage negotiator who finds himself taking prisoners when he realizes he's being framed.
