Roger Ash (Robert Young), Truck Cross (James Stewart), and Richard Gates (Tom Brown) all wear the blue and gold of the Naval Academy football squad, but when Truck admits that he's lied about his true identity because his father was cashiered out of the Navy, the center is suspended from the team just before the midshipmen's traditional gridiron battle with Army. As in so many other football films of the era, the game goes badly until Truck is reinstated mid-contest and leads Roger into the end zone and Navy to victory. The stars were all a little long in the tooth to be playing collegians--Young was 30, Stewart 27, and Brown 24--but contemporary moviegoers didn't care much about this or that they'd already seen the story many times before. Viewers today are likely to be a little more discriminating. leave a comment
