This independently made western by actor Hall Bartlett's production company was shot almost entirely on a Navajo Indian reservation. The film, which examines the conflict between white and Indian cultures, focuses on Francis Teller, a seven-year-old Navajo boy. He and his mother, grandfather, and sisters live a meager but happy existence on a reservation. The government takes the boy off the reservation--and away from his family--for mandatory schooling. Teller refuses to embrace white culture despite encouragement from Bartlett and Draper. Sick of fighting the system he hates, Teller takes off into the canyons of Arizona. Draper and Bartlett chase him, but Teller escapes. The two men, no match for Teller, become lost themselves. In a happy-ending twist, Teller ends up saving the men he is running from. Miller's Oscar nominated cinematography is outstanding. Bartlett, who produced the film, is the only professional actor in the cast. This film's portrayal of Indian life is more on the mark than the 1969 film TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE. leave a comment
