After two successive failures at the box office, the National Lampoon series hit pay dirt with this funny, though often obvious, comedy. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), obsessed with taking his family on a cross-country vacation, heads for an amusement park in California called Wally World. The trip is packed with unscheduled events, including the death of old Aunt Edna (Imogene Coca), whose corpse the family, intent on its travels, straps to the roof of the car. Griswold is attracted by a mysterious blonde motorist (Christie Brinkley), but finds himself in trouble every time she pops up. When the group finally makes it to Wally World, they end up in an altercation with the law. Director Harold Ramis, star and co-writer of STRIPES (1981) and GHOST BUSTERS (1984), keeps this film moving and heightens the humor with his inclusion of comic cameos from a variety of actors. leave a comment
