Although the title suggests a television cop show, NATE AND HAYES is an admirable attempt to recreate the swashbuckling movies of days gone by. Flashbacks tell the tale of a friendship between pirate captain Bully Hayes (Tommy Lee Jones) and missionary Nate Williamson (Michael O'Keefe), who together search the seas for Hayes' murderous ex-partner (Max Phipps) and Williamson's kidnaped wife (Jenny Seagrove). The photography shows the New Zealand and Fiji Islands locations to advantage, and Jones turns in an impressively athletic performance; but heavy reliance on cliches renders this film only slightly above-average entertainment. leave a comment
