1972, Movie, G, 92 mins

Standard Disney kiddie fare, featuring Jodie's Foster's screen debut. Young Napoleon Wilson (Johnny Whitaker) lives on a farm in Oregon with his grandfather (Will Geer). Excitement enters their lives when a circus performer persuades them to take in Major, an aging lion. But Gramps falls ill and dies, and Napoleon fears he'll be sent to an orphanage. He covers up the death with the help of Danny (Michael Douglas). When the locals start to suspect something's wrong, the boy, with lion and friend Samantha (Jodie Foster) in tow, takes off to find Danny, who lives somewhere in the mountains. The rest of the film recounts their exploits, climaxing with a last-minute rescue by a dangerous psychotic (Rex Holman) who has escaped from a mental institution. The Disney live-action staples--kids, animals, nature, and sentimentality--combine to make this a marginally worthwhile film for the children. leave a comment
