A resounding failure, based "loosely" (according to its producers) on Emile Zola's famed novel. Berger is the title character, an opportunistic
femme fatale who works her way up the social and financial ladder by first getting support from an amorous banker, then from a government official.
The finale has her tumbling back to the gutter. Notable only for Morricone's score.
