This adaptation of the Zola novel features Carol as the luxury-loving slum girl who has a tragic affair with a high government official (Boyer), leading to the downfall of both characters. Christian-Jaque has filled the movie with his standard high-gloss touches and the film bears little resemblance to Zola's work. (In French; English subtitles.) leave a comment
