Is there life after porn? Glenn Soukesian, who made 11 popular all-male adult films under the nom de porn Colton Ford, certainly hopes so. Since leaving the "industry" in 2002, the 40-year-old Glenn has been trying to kick-start a singing career, recording high-energy dance tracks he hopes will lead to a different kind of stardom. Former club promoter Chris Long's amiable, if superficial, documentary is driven by the question of whether Glenn's porn past will prove to be the thing that boosts him above the fray or the albatross that drags him under. Shot over a period of six months beginning in late 2002, the film follows Glenn and his lover, Peter Tiefenback, a.k.a. Blake Harper, another porn vet with an astonishing 60 titles under his own belt, as they attempt to reinvent "Colton Ford" as something more than a hirsute hunk with dependable genitalia. Success will allow Glenn and Peter, who's also a trained nurse, to move out of the fully web-cammed "Live and Raw Hotel" where, for a monthly fee, subscribers ogle the couple's every move as they eat, sleep, shower, urinate, chat online with their fans and, occasionally, have sex. A strong singer who tried to make it as a recording artist before turning to porn, Glenn naively hopes porn star-turned-record producer Kyle Neven will help turn his raunchy lyrics ("I'll ride you from dusk till dawn...") into dance-floor smashes, but soon regrets hitching his fortunes to Neven's. Long mixes fly-on-the-wall footage with interviews, speaking to the likes of former adult star Sharon Mitchell and porn impresario Chi Chi LaRue. They all wish Glenn well, but have no illusions about the difficulties that lie ahead. Even in the gay world, Glenn's journey is an uphill climb: As record producer Scott Anderson points out, clubgoers and circuit partygoers prefer larger-than-life female divas to former porn stars. Long, however, never really broaches the deeper issues — there's a lot that still needs to be said about the nature of celebrity — and the film wanders: A stranger's accidental afternoon overdose on a New York City sidewalk leads to an unnecessary digression on drug abuse in the porn industry. What makes the film more interesting than it might have been, however, is the warm relationship between Glenn and Peter. They're two genuinely nice guys who seem to have formed very different attitudes toward their porn careers.
