Those working-class Bah-ston accents flow thicker than the titular river that keeps the secrets of a blue-collar neighborhood — and a few bodies — hidden in Clint Eastwood's haunting adaptation of Dennis Lehane's acclaimed novel. Still, it all adds up to a shattering experience. Kevin Bacon and Academy Award winners Sean Penn and Tim Robbins play a trio of old friends whose childhoods abruptly ended the day one of them was abducted by a pair of pedophiles.
