Jules Verne's sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the subject of several films, and this 1961 version is probably the most popular. Capt. Cyrus Harding (Michael Craig) is the leader of some Union soldiers (and one Confederate deserter) who escape by balloon from a Confederate jail. They descend into the sea and wash up on the shores of a strange island. There they encounter the marvelous creations of special effects great Ray Harryhausen, including giant bees and crabs and other oversized monstrosities. In addition, they suffer an attack by pirates and meet the mysterious Capt. Nemo (Herbert Lom) and learn of his strange plan to solve the world's food shortage problems. The direction is spirited, but the film's best features are Harryhausen's effects and the score by the great film composer Bernard Herrmann, energetically rendered by the London Symphony Orchestra. leave a comment
