My Six Convicts: Review

A lightweight but socially relevant prison drama that depicts, in an episodic manner, the relationships between six convicts and a newly instated prison psychologist. Beal plays the mind-probing newcomer whose presence is met with some opposition by the prison population. Eventually one of the convicts, safecracker Mitchell, pays a visit to Beal. Before long five more convicts are frequenting Beal's office: Roland, a crook with more brains than the rest of the men; Morgan, a callous killer with a burning desire to escape; Kjellin, a diehard romantic who only wants to be with his wife; Thompson, a hard-drinking baseball player wrongly imprisoned after taking the rap for a girl; and Adler, an embezzler. Mitchell's respect for Beal and their growing friendship pays off for the safecracker when he is given a chance to prove himself. He is called on to help open an accidentally locked bank vault outside the prison walls. As payment for his services he is given a 24-hour respite from the prison. Morgan, on the other hand, has little concern for Beal and tries to make him a pawn in an escape attempt. Coming to Beal's aid, the other convicts suggest that the psychologist's role as a shield in the escape attempt be taken by a despised dentist. By the film's end Beal's mind has been tested and probed by the difficult but likable prisoners just as much as he has tested and probed theirs. The film's major fault is its lack of believable characters. The six convicts seem more like the Bowery Boys grown up than hardened criminals. If anything, MY SIX CONVICTS can boast a realistic setting. For nine days, filming took place in the newly refurbished San Quentin (called "Harbor State Prison" in the film), using actual prisoners as extras. As a security measure, those involved with the film were carefully checked and searched upon their entrance and exit, had their hands stamped with invisible ink, and were required to wear identification tags that listed their roles on the production under the word "offense." leave a comment
