Alice (Miou-Miou) is a spunky coquette who, with great difficulty, manages to juggle two jobs in two cities, as well as two husbands and two families. In Paris, she holds a part-time nursing job and lives with her husband, Philippe (Roger Hanin), a lovable airline pilot, and a 10-year-old son with an insatiable interest in Marxism. Because of Philippe's schedule, it's easy for Alice to get away to Deauville, where she works as a physical therapist and lives with Vincent (Eddy Mitchell), a fun-loving companion she's had two children with but has not married. With the help of her friends, Alice keeps her dual life a secret from both men, until one day both of them meet her at an airport restaurant. Had MY OTHER HUSBAND decided whether or not it wanted to be a comedy or a drama, it might have been a great film. Alice's dilemma is presented in a thoughtful and serious manner, but a number of scenes are better suited for a television situation comedy. The film has elements of inexplicable quirkiness throughout (for some reason, Alice has given both "husbands" very distinct sweaters--one with a large question mark on the front, the other with a large exclamation point, causing both men to do a double take when they meet), adding a nice touch to the film's dramatics. The gags often take over the story, however, and one senses that director George Lautner's main concern was to get himself (and Miou-Miou's character) out of the corner he nudges the film into without forcing the audience to think too much.
