A light comedy, this features de Havilland as a talented, though somewhat neurotic violin student at the Brissac Academy. When it's discovered she is giving lessons (which is grounds for expulsion) in order to make ends meet, Winninger tells the school's principal he will put de Havilland through school as long as his name is kept secret. He runs a music company and has a secret crush on de Havilland. His adult children, Orr and Gillis, discover their father is paying out money for a young girl, and they suspect the worst. They also resent their father turning over the management of his company to Lynn. De Havilland discovers that her scholarship is really paid by an admirer, and she tries to return the check. Fellow music students Albert and Wyman forge her name on the check, so they can join the musicians union and start their own band. They persuade de Havilland to join up as they try to set the music world on fire by putting classical pieces to swing tempos. Of course their first engagement is for none other than Winninger in a private party at his home. Complications are added as de Havilland has fallen in love with Lynn after meeting him at a ball. They see each other once more at the party, and she faints from shock. Winninger's wife takes care of her and discovers the truth behind the whole matter while Albert explains to Lynn how he forged de Havilland's name on the check. Everything is cleared up and the orchestra is a big hit, prompting the formerly stuffy principal of Brissac to add swing music to the curriculum. This was a refreshing and amiable comedy, well scripted and with sharp and breezy direction. The principal players are fine, handling the humorous complications with good comic timing. The only real problem with the film is de Havilland. It's not that she gives a bad performance, for she does a fine job in the lead. The problem is that this was her first film after her enormous success in GONE WITH THE WIND for MGM. After returning to Warner Bros.' lot, she was offered a rash of bad scripts, finally accepting this simply so she could work again. GWTW showed what she could do, and this light comedy would have better suited an up-and-coming young starlet rather than the now-seasoned de Havilland. leave a comment
