Aspiring filmmaker Brian Herzlinger's quest to fulfill his life-long fantasy of dating Drew Barrymore walks such a fine line between what separates dreamer from stalker, that the film he made about it elicits a variety of responses. You're never sure whether to shout "Go for it, Brian!", "Jeez, Herzlinger, get a life!" or "Look out, Drew, he's right behind you!" Born just one year before Barrymore, the now-27-year-old Herzlinger has been in love with the starlet ever since seeing her as a child in E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. He blew his first opportunity to meet his dream girl when he froze at the CHARLIE'S ANGELS premiere, but thankfully, history is about to repeat itself in true Hollywood style: The sequel, CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE is scheduled to open in just a few weeks, and Herzlinger is determined not only to get himself into the premiere party, but to get up enough nerve to finally ask Barrymore out on a date. There are, however, a few catches: Flat broke, Herzlinger only has the $1100 he recently won on a game show (the winning answer was, believe it or not, "Drew Barrymore"), and he has to get a "Sure, I'd love to" from Barrymore within a month. That's when Circuit City's 30-day return policy expires on the videocamera he and his two friends and co-directors Brett Winn and Jon Gunn bought on credit but can't afford. Having spent the last six years in L.A. working entry level jobs while waiting for some kind of break, the New Jersey-born Herzlinger knows that Hollywood is all about who you know, and he approaches his mission as if it were a real-life game of Six Degrees of Separation. Herzlinger tries everything from making an appointment with Barrymore's facialist, to sitting down with Eric Roberts (Gunn knows Roberts, who now works on a series with Andy Dick who once… oh, never mind) and Corey Feldman. He even gets Winn, who edits trailers for a living, to put together a promo film advertising his quest as if it were an upcoming movie and send a copy to Barrymore's production company. Revealing the outcome would mean spoiling the fun, but really, success or failure is beside the point. Watching an average Joe like Herzlinger attempt to break into the unreal world of celeb-reality reveals so much about stardom and the bizarre status we accord stars like Barrymore in our culture. And you can't help but root for the guy; he's a likable schlub who always manages to keep to the right of creepy. leave a comment --Ken Fox
