MVP: MOST VALUABLE PRIMATE

Think AIR BUD, with a hockey-playing chimp. And while it's as predictable as a Nancy Drew novel, the movie's sweet and sort of cute — watch and see if it doesn't kind of sneak up on you, you big cynic. Jack is a chimp that's been taught sign language by kindly Dr. Kendall (Lomax Study), of Pueblo University, located somewhere in Southern California. Kendall plans to return Jack to the El Simian Nature Preserve, where he was born, but before he can finalize the arrangements, Kendall has a fatal heart attack. Cost-conscious Dean Peabody (Oliver Muirhead) sells Jack to the University of Tennessee, where they're doing hepatitis research, but Darren the janitor (Russell Ferrier) overhears and helps Jack escape. He puts the primate on a train to El Simian, but Jack misses his stop and winds up in Canada, where he takes refuge in a handsome tree house in the backyard of the Westover family. The Westovers have just moved to Canada, and their kids, Steven (AIR BUD star Kevin Zegers) and Tara (Jamie Renee Smith) are having a tough time fitting in. Tara's deafness isolates her from her new classmates, while Steven — a top-ranked hockey player on his old high school team — is forced to join the second-tier Nuggets, the loosingest team in British Columbia. Tara befriends Jack, who reveals a hidden talent: He's hell on skates, and next thing you know he's helping the Nuggets whack the puck out of their rivals. Naturally, nasty old Dr. Peabody tries to snatch Jack back, but never fear: Everything works out all right in the end. AIR BUD and AIR BUD: GOLDEN RECEIVER executive producer Robert Vince makes his directing debut with this picture, and he clearly scrutinized the formula — right down to the name (AIR BUD's working title was "MVP: Most Valuable Pooch"). leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
