A low-budget film about making a low-budget film, MUTE WITNESS is a smart thriller that's not afraid to be play rough with its protagonist, a mute special effects artist (Russian actress Marina Sudina). In the tradition of THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE, WAIT UNTIL DARK, HEAR NO EVIL and other disabled-women-in-peril stories, Sudina is terrorized relentlessly after she discovers that some of the crew have been making snuff movies after hours. Just as the fictional filmmakers -- inept, arrogant Americans filming in Moscow to save money -- make do with their limited resources, so writer/director/producer Anthony Waller utilizes the Russian locales to full effect. Best is a 20-minute chase sequence in which Sudina skillfully evades her pursuers in a shabby film studio. Billed only as "The Mystery Guest Star," Alec Guinness appears briefly as an omnipotent crime boss. leave a comment
