This film opens with the most annoying of filmdom's conventions, the "cute meet." Two taxi cabs crash, thus allowing Martin and Hayworth to hook up. He's a talented crooner awaiting deportation; she's a singer engaged to marry newspaper publisher Mowbray. Ill-written, the film contains a series of musical numbers featuring the pair and Kostelanetz's orchestra. Kostelanetz was featured on a popular CBS radio show at the time, and, in an unusual move, the program and network are mentioned in the film. Radio and films being in direct competiton, such a coupling was unheard of in Hollywood filmmaking. This was Hayworth's last really low-budget film before she became a big star. Martin, who couldn't really act anyway, never made it big in motion pictures and scores here only as a talented crooner. The Robert Wright/Chet Forrest songs are passable; "It's a Blue World" received an Oscar nomination that year. Other Songs included "I've Got Music in My Heart," "Punchinello," "Oh, What a Lovely Dream," "No Other Love," "Hearts in the Sky," and "Prelude to Love." Otherwise, this is a forgettable feature. leave a comment
