1964, Movie, NR, 94 mins

Not only is this good, campy fun, but it's a treasure trove for trivia fan everywhere. In this sequel to BEACH PARTY (1963), Avalon and Funicello are distressed when a new gym, operated by Rickles, opens up next to their strip of sun, sand, and surf. Egotist Lupus is the king of Rickles' musclemen; Paluzzi is a wealthy young countess who comes chasing after Lupus and then sets her sights on Avalon. Boy oh boy, does Funicello ever get sore! Some silly business involving a showdown between the beach gang and the muscle maniacs is broken up by Lorre. This was the great actor's final film, and the studio kept his appearance a big secret. His name did not appear in the opening credits, although the closing credits proclaim: "The producers extend special thanks to Mr. Peter Lorre for his contribution to this film as `Mr. Strangdour.' Soon to be seen in BIKINI BEACH." This next film was made but without Lorre, who died and was replaced by another film veteran, Boris Karloff. Typical beach movie fare, MUSCLE BEACH includes an appearance by "Little" Stevie Wonder and teenyboppers twisting to tunes cowritten by Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Songs include "Muscle Beach Party," "Runnin' Wild," "Muscle Bustle," "My First Love," "Surfin' Woodie," "Surfer's Holiday" (Roger Christian, Gary Usher, Wilson); "Happy Street," "A Girl Needs a Boy" (Guy Hemric, Jerry Styner). leave a comment
