Murder Ahoy: Review

This was the final "Miss Marple" film that starred Margaret Rutherford in the series. The series was later revived, with Angela Lansbury in the role--but as good as Lansbury is, the picture of Rutherford as the tweedy sleuth is the one that remains in the viewer's mind. There's a huge meeting of an organization that oversees a boat used for the rehabilitation of wayward youth. One of the leading trustees, Longhurst, dies at the conclave before he can reveal some important information about the craft. Rutherford is also a trustee, and she suspects foul play surrounding Longhurst's death. The cops discount her feelings (as is usual in mysteries of this sort). Against the wishes of Jeffries, the captain, Rutherford goes aboard the ship and leaves her longtime aid, Davis, ashore to look after matters there. (Davis, Rutherford's husband in real life, is often seen in small roles in the "Miss Marple" series, as well as in many other films that starred the great lady.) Rutherford noses around and learns that Matthews is playing Fagin to a group of unlikely lads--teaching the boys to break into houses. When Matthews and a matron, Foster, are killed, Rutherford continues uncovering data until she discovers that Mervyn, another trustee, has been siphoning off funds from the charitable organization and has killed the other two in order to keep them mum. Rutherford gets the goods on Mervyn, who is arrested after a funny sword duel between the amateur detective and the culprit. What a shame that Rutherford--funny, literate, and bouyant--didn't make more of these traits. leave a comment
