If Kermit's a frog, Miss Piggy a sow and Pepe a shrimp — sorry, a prawn — then what, exactly, is Gonzo? That question torments Gonzo himself, and provides the premise for this charming entry in the ongoing Muppet movies series. Plagued by a recurring dream in which he's booted off the ark because Noah (F. Murray Abraham) can't figure out what manner beast the blue thing with the curly schnozzle is, the depressed Gonzo (voice of Dave Goelz) is determined to find his roots. One morning, his alphabet cereal reaches out to him: "RU THERE?" "WATCH THE SKIES." Clearly a message from his family, whom Gonzo assumes are from outer space. He sets up camp on the roof of the Muppets' boarding house and waits. But Gonzo isn't the only one watching the skies: COVNET, a nefarious government agency headed by K. Edgar Singer (Jeffrey Tambor), is also on the lookout for signs of extraterrestrial life, and have pinpointed Gonzo as the aliens' point man on earth. Which is just peachy with Miss Piggy (voice of Frank Oz), who's landed a job at local station WHHZ (she claims to be the station's newest TV journalist; she's really just the coffee pig) and has the scoop of the century right in the palm of her shapely hoof. In this age of computer-generated whatevers, there's something quaint about the felt-and-wire Muppets, who still bounce across the screen and are seen only from the waist up. The folks at Jim Henson Pictures have wisely opted not to mess with the late Jim Henson's winning formula; the crowd-pleasing soundtrack features hot '70s funk classics, the Muppets are as cute as ever and there are more than a few flashes of adult humor to keep grown-ups laughing right along with the kiddies. leave a comment --Ken Fox
