Munchies: Review

Steven Spielberg and Joe Dante's 1984 film GREMLINS was an indisputably violent picture chronicling the mayhem wreaked on a community by a group of strange little creatures. For all its problems, at least the film got a reaction from its audience. This bland horror comedy, an unashamed GREMLINS rip-off, doesn't even do that. The story opens in a South American cave where an anthropologist (Harvey Korman) is looking for an alien he hopes will bring him professional recognition. Accompanying him is his teenaged son (Charles Stratton), who takes a dim view of his father's activities. But, lo and behold, what should they stumble upon but a small creature hidden behind some old Aztec ruins. They capture it, dub it a "Munchie," and bring it home where it eventually multiplies and causes more than a few problems. A subplot involves Korman in a dual role as the anthropolgist's evil brother, who has secretly been storing nuclear waste in an underground dwelling. The Munchies, simple creations at best, are the liveliest thespians in the cast, blowing away their wooden human counterparts. Even camp director Paul Bartel, who's given many a funny cameo performance, fails to bring any life to his role. The funniest thing about the entire proceedings is the first Munchie's pet name, Arnold Ziffel, after the pig from TV's "Green Acres." But then what can you say about a film in which the best performances are given by puppets? leave a comment
