Ray, a poor orphan, finds a medallion bearing the likeness of Queen Victoria and decides he wants to meet Her Royal Highness. He's caught attempting to sneak into Windsor Castle, and his intentions become the center of a raging controversy. He finally gets to meet the Queen, played by Dunne, who is charmed by the young urchin. She has been in seclusion, refusing to fulfill her royal obligations, but the boy renews her spirits and she returns to public life. This pleases Guinness, as Disraeli, who needs the Queen's assistance to gain Parliamentary approval of some new programs. Dunne is very good as the Queen, but Ray steals the show as the lovable youth. A warm and enjoyable movie that makes good use of famous sights such as Windsor Castle, the Tower of London, and the Parliament buildings. A superb makeup job by Aylot makes Dunne look extraordinarily like Victoria. Not surprisingly, THE MUDLARK was chosen as a command performance movie enjoyed by all the Royal Family. Dunne only made one more film, IT GROWS ON TREES, before retiring from the screen to devote herself to various posts within the Republican Party, eventually serving as an alternate delegate to the United Nations. Alfred Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears briefly. Edward Stevenson and Margaret Furse's costume design earned the film an Oscar nomination. leave a comment
