Based on a scandalous true story that unfolded in turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh, MRS. SOFFEL was a multimillion-dollar bust at the box office, despite the presence of Mel Gibson and Diane Keaton. Kate (Keaton) is the often-ill wife of prison warden Peter Soffel (Edward Herrmann), who runs his jail with a tough attitude. Kate spends a great deal of her time walking around the jail and reading the Bible to the various prisoners. Awaiting execution for the murder of a grocer are two brothers, Ed (Gibson) and Jack Biddle (Matthew Modine), who have become media favorites because of the letters Ed has been writing to the newspapers. Ed is the idol of teenage girls who find him attractive and dangerous. When Kate meets Ed, there is instant magnetism. Gillian Armstrong's direction is slow, and the cinematography is murky. The actual escape didn't work out, and neither did this picture. leave a comment
