In her second film, after having scored a smash in COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA, Shirley Booth is ill-served in the role of a Beverly Hills roominghouse landlady who looks back upon her romance with Ryan. Flashbacks show her wooed away from her NYC nightclub singing post by Ryan, who takes her on a six-week vacation to the West Coast. She stays on as his mistress, though assuming the Leslie name. Booth knows little about Ryan's life and, after his death, learns that he was a tycoon airplane manufacturer. Revolving around this sudsy weeper are other minor stories, those of Mrs. Leslie's roomers, Nicol and Millar, who fall in love on her premises, Janssen as an annoying teenager, and the salesman Morgan. The dialog is briefly bright but most of the film bogs down in murky melodrama with Ryan mismatched as the lover. One handkerchief only. leave a comment
