Class differences and romance in 1783 are brought to the screen when Graves, the prince regent, falls in love with a Catholic widow, Howard. She laughs off his romantic overtures, realizing that nothing will ever come of the relationship. The jilted Graves resorts to a suicide attempt and
when Howard sees the state he is in, gives in to a secret marriage. Rumors of the marriage spread throughout the country, causing a split between Howard and Kann. Graves denies his marriage, Howard runs away, and he soon weds Rotha.
