This strange curiosity piece might have made some sense if whimsy had been injected, but it failed to make any noise because it lay there like a lump of clay. Robards is a weak-willed postman married to an all-time shrew, Dennis, who is so overbearing that Robards decides the only way to escape her is to metamorphose into a tree (hence the title). Robards goes from a sympathetic to a self-centered man, and we lose any feeling of caring for him, something we never have for the preposterous, posturing Dennis, whose acting tricks pall very quickly.
