A tidy horror-thriller which is more effective through its power of suggestion than it is through any shocking visuals, though there are a couple of incidents to satisfy those looking to be shocked. The story revolves around a rich baron, Rolfe, whose face has been permanently frozen into a wide grin after uncovering his father's corpse to get at a winning lottery ticket. This source of his great wealth has also become his lifelong misery. Rolfe insists upon having Lewis, a famous neurosurgeon and former lover of Rolfe's wife, attempt a solution for his problem. Rolfe himself had been experimenting on possible solutions, though more disagreeable than those of medical doctors, such as having Homolka, the one-eyed servant, attach leeches to pretty girls' faces. Lewis succeeds, but in doing so leaves Rolfe without the ability to eat or speak. The picture is filled with atmosphere and keeps the suspense going throughout. Homolka gives a startling performance as the sinister servant. leave a comment
