Based on the semiautobiographical novel Theophilus North by Thornton Wilder, the film takes place in the snobby high-society world of Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1926. Young Yale graduate Theophilus North (Anthony Edwards) has a mysterious ability to generate static electricity in his body that manifests itself in mild shocks coming from his hands.
