Somehow the filmmakers managed to take the subject of the mistreatment of migrant workers and turn it into a vehicle for displaying Bronson's violent heroics. In this one he's a farmer who is exemplary for his fairness but lands in jail anyway. During an attempted jailbreak by Lettieri, Bronson foils the mafioso's attempts and offers to return the chieftain for his own freedom. This done, Lettieri threatens to get even with Bronson. First, one of Bronson's workers has his legs pinned into a loading dock by a slow-moving car. The result is bloodless but painful to think about. When Bronson still refuses to back off, Lettieri's men locate his watermelon stock and machine-gun it into oblivion. The rest of the film shows Bronson battling the hitmen of Lettieri from his Colorado ranch and, of course, emerging victorious. Based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, whose crime fiction has slowly creeped into movies. HOMBRE (1967) is also based on a work of his, as is STICK (1985), which unfortunately received a miserable screen treatment. leave a comment
