There are some stage actors who could never fully transmit their charisma on screen. Alfred Drake, Alfred Lunt, and Lynn Fontanne are the first that come to mind, but the same could be said of Ezio Pinza, the toast of the Great White Way in "South Pacific," whose career on celluloid never took off. Here, Pinza plays a prince from Mitteleuropa who falls for nightery chirp Turner while he is on holiday in Italy. They are mad for each other until he gets the call to move up one notch and become king of his land and departs. A dozen years pass in a twinkling and Turner has become a huge Hollywood star when he strolls back in her life, which is currently (and conveniently) free of male companionship. They go off to Palm Springs for a couple of days of sun and lust (with some good comedy provided by Main and Reynolds as the Palm Springs landlady and her niece), but Pinza is no Duke of Windsor and he cannot give up his throne for the woman he loves. Hardwicke, the prime minister of the country, reminds Pinza of his duties and he reluctantly leaves Turner, but with the promise that he will come back again. Audiences had been waiting for this movie, but the studio viewed it as a turkey, so they held it back until after another Pinza picture, STRICTLY DISHONORABLE, was issued, hoping that film would be a hit and people would flock to see the great singer's next one. Neither picture made a dent in the audience's pocketbooks and Pinza's movie fortunes went plummeting. Singer Trudy Erwin again supplied Turner's singing voice. The songs included: "My Love and My Mule" (Harold Arlen, Dorothy Fields, sung by Trudy Erwin), "Andiamo," "Let Me Look at You" (Arlen, Fields, sung by Ezio Pinza), and the hit "You Belong to My Heart" (Ray Gilbert, Augustin Lara, sung by Pinza). leave a comment
