Question: About a year ago I saw a preview for a British indie about a quadriplegic man who falls in love with his caregiver or something to that effect. For the life of me, I can't remember the title, though I think the main character's name was Charlie. It looked good, but I never heard anything else about it.
Answer: The movie is Rory O'Shea Was Here (2005), and it's a tearjerker about the friendship between two young men who meet in a pleasant but infantilizing long-term care institution. Easygoing Michael has cerebral palsy and is treated as though he's stupid because of his slurred speech; hyperverbal firebrand Rory, confined to a wheelchair by a fast-moving form of muscular dystrophy and able to move only a couple of fingers on one hand, never lets anyone forget how fiercely intelligent he is. It had a brief and limited theatrical release in the U.S. and is available on DVD from Universal.
